An afternoon spent at the Java Cabana

The coffee shop with Christmas lights at 2170 Young Ave. is where Mary A. Burns makes coffee, teas, juices, food and chats with customers.
Burns owns the Java Cabana, which is open 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to midnight Friday to Saturday and noon to 10 p.m. Sunday.
Painted two different shades of blue, the walls of the Java Cabana are covered in posters advertising community events, bands and art shows.
None of the1950s tables match—some yellow, some wood, some pink—but none of the customers seem to mind as they talk with Burns or each other.
On any day, customers can walk in and play with one of the two chess sets with a friend, read a book or play a board game.
They can also contribute to the Java Cabana journal—a small, hardback diary that customers contribute to occasionally.
There are free events weekly at the Java Cabana including an Open Mic night from 8 to 10 p.m. every Thursday.
