Memphis College of Art students tell their stories in gallery.
Students said they chose Cooper-Young area to showcase their artwork, because at the end of the month, their artwork receives the most views and sales.
“Cooper-Young is an optimistic, common place for young artists. It provides a better foundation,” said Anna Beth Rice, a graduate of MCA.
Prices of artwork ranged from $50 to $200.
Some of the students said what inspired them to become artists was their passion and tradition.
“My first painting was completed in high school, and my best painting I’ve done was named “Cradle Will Rock,” said Meredith Lones, first year student at MCA.
Art styles varied from abstract, traditional, representational, and folk.
“My art pieces define “a narrative behind art”, as a work to support the art. They express meaning from a western, French type tradition,” said Alec Mcyrte, first year student at MCA.
However, some of the MCA students say that even though they are studying art, they do not intend to try to make a living as an artist.
“It will always be something I enjoy doing on the side, but I rather teach art than sell it, “said Lones.
Rice says she knows that accomplished artists are not just skilled, but find something deeper in their work.
“If you want to become an artist, you have to be able to define art. “Successful art occurs from communication and meaning.”
The installation of this artwork is viewable until the end of the month. New artwork is available for display the first Friday of each month.
