Cooper-Young Resident Helps the World Visit Memphis' Past, Online
It used to be that if you wanted to find old photos of life in Memphis, you had to search through mounds of archived photos. Now, you can just type search terms into your computer. The Memphis Public Libary has put more than 6,000 digital images onto their site. This has all been done by Sarah Frierson, the digital projects manager for the library and a resident of Cooper-Young. She also serves on the board of the Cooper-Young Community Association.
Friereson says there are not many images specifically tagged "Cooper-Young" yet, but more are coming. She suggests that you type in street intersections to possibly bring up more Cooper-Young area images.
You can read an article about the digital project in the Commercial Appeal. You can also go to the Memphis Public Libary Digital Archives and start searching yourself! If you find any great photos from the archive - send us the link! We may post the photo and will give you credit for finding it. Click on these old photos of Cooper-Young for details.
The library has also created a blog that takes you to collections it has curated. Check out this cool one - The Memphis Room.
