A string of gun crimes concern midtown citizens after random gunshots were fired January of 2014.
John Moore, 65, was walking from a friend’s house on Madison to the bus stop when he heard 3 gunshots close by at 6:00 a.m.
“I don’t usually be in this area often, I never have any problem that’s why it shocked me when I heard gun shots coming from a few streets over”, Moore said.
Moore said he heard gunshots from N. Watkins St.
There have been some concern from residents in the midtown area quite some time about gun control in the area.
In 2013 there was a man shot after being ask for direction by a stranger in a vehicle.
According to a police report, the gunman stopped about 8:30 p.m. to ask the man where Madison Avenue was. When the victim turned to point, he was shot.
Investigators don't know why.
The man staggered into the street and the car sped away.
The victim did survive the gunshot wound to the chest.
The incident was the latest in a string of gun crimes to strike the Midtown area south of Union in the past couple of months of 2013.
“Crime has no boundaries. It can happen anywhere. I believe some people become too relaxed after crime doesn’t happen there often,” said R.G. Houston, Memphis police officer.
Houston says it seems that more incidents are being reported in the past two months near the Midtown area.
Memphis police offered these tips to prevent and cope with crime.
· Partner with police through neighborhood associations.
· Know what's going on in your neighborhood and pass along information to neighbors and police.
· Trust your instincts and stay alert.
· If you become a victim of a violent crime, remain calm and comply.
· Be a good witness and get a description of the suspect.
