Cooper-Young First Stop for "I Love Memphis" Campaign
By Lurene Kelley/MicroMemphis Editor
May 12, 2011
When Memphis blogger Kerry Crawford created her first handprinted "I Love Memphis" sign two years ago, she had no idea it would one day become a mural - let alone 10 murals that will dot the city's landscape. Crawford is the one-woman show behind the Memphis Convention and Vistor's Bureau's, "I Love Memphis" campaign. Her blog is already a popular spot to find out about interesting people, places, and events in the River City. Now she hopes these murals will be a place for people to take pictures and spread Memphis-love via social media.
Nine more murals will spring up around Memphis before the end of June. Brandon Marshall painted the first and a team of seven other muralists are already signed up through the Urban Arts Commission for the rest. The project is also sponsored by the City of Memphis.
In fact, Crawford is looking for volunteers to design three of the murals. You don't have to be a designer or an artist - you just need an idea and one of the muralists will bring it to life! The public will vote for the top designs. Deadline is May 27, 2011.
Crawford says Cooper-Young was chosen as the first mural site, because the neighborhood organizations were enthusiastic and willing to allow space for the project. The other sites have not yet been chosen.
Here are some pictures from the unveiling of the first "I Love Memphis" sign. You can see it by the train trestle entrance on Cooper Street.
