Mulan Bistro will bring a new dimension, more diversity to Cooper-Young

December 6, 2011
In two-to-three months from now -- roughly around the beginning of the Chinese New Year, Cooper-Young will receive a gift -- the long awaited grand opening of the first Chinese restaurant in the neighborhood, Mulan Asian Bistro.
Co-owners Matt Kan and William Chang, who have been partners in the business for over 20 years, seized the opportunity to open a new restaurant in the CY area. Memphis customers have been raving about their food, but complained that their Collierville restaurant was too far away.
"We just want to serve Midtown," Chang said. "We have a lot of Chinese people in that area and that are from U of M, St. Jude and UT-Medical that say, you're too far away with the current restaurant. So we decided to move closer to serve those that like our food."
Chang and Kan say that the current menu and service will remain the same. Though a new menu will be added for the new restaurant, the new Mulan Bisto in the CY area will not have the same layout as the current one in Collierville.

"We have a new menu that will include authentic Chinese food, Chang said. "Nobody in Memphis has this food, and that's why we have a lot of customers -- because no one has the type of food we sell. And the new restaurant won't be like this one. It will be more for young people. It will be more fresher, have more stuff and just for young people."
Some of the features of the new Mulan Asian Bistro will include a Sushi Bar and a vegetable and juice bar. But the best thing that Mulan Bistro will feature... is itself. Chang and Kan say that the biggest thing about opening a new restaurant is the fact that they're finally coming to Cooper-Young.
"People have been saying oh yeah, we're glad that you have decided to move," Kan said. "We have been getting great reviews as far as wanting us in that area. Also, we like the area. There are a lot of artists, musicians and kids in that area too." Fans of the Mulan Asian Bistro can expect the restaurant to be in full swing around February, if not sooner. "They (Cooper-Young District) want us in that area so bad," Kan said. "They said there's nothing in the Midtown area that's fine Chinese dining. Plus, we're helping them out because they don't want another steakhouse or anything like that again coming and moving in -- so we're helping out the area." |
