Jay Etkin, who is originally from New York but will soon be opening art gallery in Memphis, lives by this quote: “Work Hard and Be Nice.”
Etkins, who is originally from New York, will be opening an Art Gallery located at 942 S. Cooper St., this coming spring. It will consist of contemporary and ethnographic art.
The Cooper Young neighborhood should be expecting a change with the gallery. Etkin’s, who owned a gallery in 1989-1999, is a pioneer to the area and said he is happy to be back.
“I looked at the neighborhood and felt connected to it. It looked like a valuable neighborhood that was going to grow in the right direction, and I wanted to be a part of that” Etkin said.
He wants the gallery to be engaging to the local community not just a retail store. He said that the building would be open to the Cooper Young neighborhood for special events, parties, and meetings for the Cooper Young Business Association.
The Director of Gallery 56, Rollon Kocsis, said, “We are delighted and think that it is a great idea that another art gallery is opening in the community. It gives the community an opportunity to visit more than one gallery in the neighborhood.”
“I want to share my ideas and vision, every business should be involved. What we do should reach out to our neighborhood.” Etkin said.
Etkin has been a natural at art since he was 5-years-old. He said that he was always thinking about it and creating images that he saw in his head.
His mother inspired him most throughout his childhood.
“I could count on her religiously to express herself daily throughout media of drawing.” Etkin said.
Growing up in Brooklyn, N.Y. also inspired him because he had access to the music, visited museums frequently and lived in the environment that helped him think like an artist.
Expectations for the gallery include being more active, interesting, and also involved in the community.
Art pieces that will be displayed will be Contemporary art and also Ethnographic art. Ethnographic art consist of art or artifacts of different cultures and tribes around the world that are spiritual or religious in nature. The ethnographic art are pieces from different ethnic groups such as Africa, China, and Mexico.
“I am inspired by art everyday particularly African art.”
The Contemporary and Ethnographic Works of Art Gallery will display artists who have years of experience. Etkin’s is also interested with young artist to connect and share and teach them to become more successful and mature about their work. He said he is happy to help the young artist.
“I see this place as a space for success, energy, and happenings. I create experience. I am a space that creates experience for the public and its more fun.” Etkin said.
