Shelby County Unified School District: Cooper-Young, District 24

The new district plan for a unified Shelby County Schools is being contested by the current Shelby County School Board. The board is also challenging the appointment process of a new 25-member unified school board.
Until the issue is decided in the courts, the Shelby County Commission has accepted applications for the new unified board.The commission was set to select applicants on Monday, March 24th, but the process was delayed by a court order. Date for hearing on matter now set for April 4th.

The bulk of Cooper-Young is situated in District 24.
Who Could Represent Cooper-Young?
According to The Commercial Appeal, 12 applicants are vying for the Cooper-Young area district seat. Based on information in the C.A. and a MicroMemphis search of public LinkedIn pages, the makeup of the pool looks like this: nearly an even split between women and men, age range from 33-67 years old, and only one candidate has run for or held an elected office. Half of the candidates have advanced degrees, two are retired, and a pastor, a former corporate attorney, and a technology CEO are in the pool.
