Young Avenue Deli gets a makeover

Though it may seem like heresy to some long-time patrons, the owners of The Young Avenue Deli felt as though the interior of this Cooper-Young interior needed a change. "Tiger (Bryant) and his wife both agreed that a restaurant needs a revamp every few years, every five or six years," general manager Phillip Stroud said. "I agreed with them because it was long overdue and I know that some of the regulars who come here would probably not like the change, but I spent a long time 'Googling' it and trying to make sure that it was the right thing to do. So what I came up with was, if you're not willing to change, then you're not living. You have to change with the times and not stay in the same rut." |
What Bryant and Stroud came up with was a mural behind the bar area, which can be seen in the above picture, done by a local artist. It depicts a collage of the Memphis parkways -- East Parkway South and South Parkway East.
Also included in the renovation is a new paint job, re-conditioned wood across the back walls and a few more televisions for when you want to come and watch the game -- after all, this is still a bar.
"We don't think we did anything wrong with what we done," Stroud said. "I like it and what I like most about the mural is that we want people to come in and see it and be like, "oh yeah that is a picture of Midtown.'" But rest assured, everything else locals have come to rely on at 'The Deli' is staying the same. You can still count on events throughout the week, such as a DJ on Wednesdays from a local radio station, trivia Thursdays and live bands on Fridays. If you are a Pay-Per-View events fan, Stroud says you can still count on The Deli for no coverage charge, unlike most other competitors in town. "Tiger has the biggest heart of anyone that I've ever worked for," Stroud said. "He's a huge MMA fan and we don't want to charge people because we just want them to come in, have a good time and drink some beer because we offer everything that you would ever want to drink."
