Eclectic Eye hosts Cornelius Carter art exhibit

Art is in the eye of the beholder, or in this case, art is beheld in the Eclectic Eye.
“Faces,” an art exhibit by Cornelius Carter, is on display until Feb. 28 at the The Eclectic Eye, an optometrist’s office and eyeglass frame shop at 242 South Cooper. Carter said his artwork is a combination of musical influences throughout his lifetime.
“I just love music and I get inspiration from listening to music, everything from the Beatles to Prince,” Carter said.
The collection took more than a year to prepare for this show and the space for the exhibit has been a dream of Carter’s for several years.
“When I was displaying my art on South Main, the Eclectic Eye was a big-name place to display and that was 10 years ago,” Carter said. “Cut to 2013 and I decided to get back to showing my art and I could not think of a better place.”
The Eclectic Eye offers artistic and fashion-forward eyewear. Since opening in 2002, owners Michael and Robbie Johnson Weinberg have integrated their love for art into the boutique.
“We have had art exhibits in the store for the past 11 years and it is all due to the Weinbergs’ love of art,” according to the manager Aaron Reagan.
The exhibit by Carter is his first in seven years and the staff is happy to have him and his work at the Eclectic Eye.
“I love Carter’s artwork, I love looking at it every day and it is definitely a conversation starter for customers that are here,” Reagan said.
“Faces” is mostly comprised of dead singers and actors, including Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Ray Charles and John Lennon. Prince is the only artist that is included in the show that is still alive.
“The biggest reason I wanted to display my art again is that there is nothing like seeing art in person,” Carter said. “You can see the texture and the colors more vividly.”
The exhibit can be seen during regular business hours of the Eclectic Eye, Mondays to Saturdays.
