Peabody elementary was taken over by some of the best chilli chefs in the city on Satrday as the school PTA hosted its annual chilli cook off. The school has sponsored the contest for five years to raise money to improve the appearance of the campus and areas nearby.

"One of the things I like about this school is that it has one of the most active parental support groups you'll find anywhere," said Mayor A.C. Wharton.

Contestants, volunteers, kids, and parents came from all around the city to enjoy the chilli. Contestants ranged from parents, teachers, and volunteers to Peabody school alumni. The cook-off judged contestants in these categories: People’s Choice, Judges Choice, Best Hot, Most Unusual and Best Vegetarian.

The school raised money in two ways; Participats purcased one ticket, which included four tastings and a drink for $5. Contestants also had jars where the people could tip their favorite chef. (The chef with the most tips wins the People’s Choice award).

The cook off  brought out some of Memphis' finest, guests included Mayor A.C. Wharton, who has a grandson who attends the school, Congressman Steve Cohen, and also serving as a judge of the competition, Shelby County school board Commisioner Tomeka Hart.
