First Congo mission director loves her work
Julia Hicks is the Director of Missions at First Congregational Church of Christ at 1000 S. Cooper St. in Cooper-Young. She is the coordinator for up to 30 missions and partners working out of the building. Hicks has been a First Congo member for 12 years. She has a great passion for reaching out to the community.
Crime a concern for former Midtown resident
Crime is a very important issue for the Cooper- Young area. One of the former residents of Midtown, Ranna Wilson is a 27-year-old woman who moved out of the neighborhood because of the crime.
Martial artist finds new home in C-Y storefront
David Ferguson is a retired professional mixed martial arts fighter. He has traveled the world, winning titles as close to home as Nashville, Tenn., and as far away as Copenhagen, Denmark. Since retiring from competition in 2006, he has become a trainer and coach in the Memphis area. He recently expanded his business to the Cooper-Young area, where he runs Memphis Fitness Kickboxing at 2183 Young Ave.
Goner Records a great place for music, vinyl
Located on 2152 Young Avenue, Goner Records is owned by Eric Friedl and Zac Ives. Friedl, who is a musician started the store with Ives after the Goner Records label was already in existence. Now the store is a great place for fans of vinyl records. Friedl discussed Goner Records and why vinyl is making a comeback.
Toad Hall Antiques store
owner calls it quits
Dana Whitehead is the owner of Toad Hall Antiques and Gifts store, which is located at 2129 Central Ave. She is originally from Charlotte, NC but came to Memphis initially for a job in the hotel business. Shortly after moving to Memphis she decided to open her store in 2003. Since she’s been in the Cooper- Young neighborhood it has been great and she loves the city and the people. The last day the store will be open is the same day the store was established, Feb. 28, 2003. It will be a good-bye anniversary to the neighborhood and all her loyal customers.
Truck stop owner discusses new food venue
A new place to stop in and grab a bite is coming to the Cooper-Young neighborhood called the Truck Stop at the corner Cooper Street and Central Avenue. Taylor Berger, owner, talks about his new business venture. Berger, a former lawyer, also owns Yolo and Chiwawa — both in Midtown’s Overton Square — as well as Tamp and Tap downtown.
From renter to owner: C-Y citizen renovates home
Cooper Young resident of six-months, Jenna Stonecipher is now a 26-year-old real-estate investor in the area. She lives across the street from her new property, which is located at 2156 Evelyn. It currently has one resident and is being renovated for more.
