It's a walk back through time as you step through the door of vintage department store, Flashback, located at 2304 Central Ave. On one side, you may find a retro dinette set and on the other... a dozen red throwback leather jackets. Store owner, Millett Vance, said Flashback has been providing Memphis with rare nostalgic apparel and 50s and 60s decorative furniture for several years. "Our customers range from 7-year-olds to 95-year-olds. As a matter of fact, I sold an item to a 7-year-old today," said Vance. |
But it wasn't always called Flashback, Vance's very first store of 50s collectibles and vintage pieces was once Lou's located in the Cooper-Young community and then there was Collect-a-rama on Cooper Street. Finally, Flashback was opened and has been serving the Cooper-Young neighborhood since 1985.
Urban Outfitters, which opened in March of 2011, has yet to create a threat for the vintage shop. The popular retail chain also carries vintage-look clothing, but Vance doesn't view that as a problem for her store.
"We've been here for 26 years, so people know about us. We're really not competitors. They have their customers and we have ours, “said Vance.
