The Man Behind The Mac

Ashli Blow/MicroMemphis Reporter The apple of Nick Canterucci's eye is diffrent than most local artist and it shows on this year's 2011 Cooper-Young Festival poster. Canterucci is responsible for the design displaying an imac 3G in a pink shell that encases images of the community. The theme is 'FUN in the 21st century,' aiming for a high tech yet pop art feel, as he explains on the Cooper-Young Festival website. In addition, the poster complements his recent art show at Odessa, The New Frontier. The exhibit displayed old compact Mac computers incorporated with bits of Canterucci's eclectic art. Canterucci said the show celebrates how the technology of the early Macintosh computers changed the way people used technology and started exchanging information. Back in June, Canterucci told reporters from the website Live from Memphis, " “If you look at them, they’re like sculpture. And they were a new frontier when they came out." "The Mac is an important part to the lifestyle of Cooper-Young," Canterucci said, "Especially the younger residents. Originally, the art piece(poster design) was an off-shoot of the exhibit. If it wasn't selected for this year's poster design, I would have added it to
The New Frontier line up."
Three of these "redone" Macs will be on display during the 2011 Cooper-Young Art Invitational as part of The New Frontier display. That is this Thursday, September 15 from 6 to 9 PM located at the David Perry Smith Gallery - 703 New York Street.
