The Shimmy Mob will be hosting an event to raise awareness and funds for women and children’s shelters in the area.
The event will be held in Overton Square Saturday, May 10 from 4pm- 6pm at The Corner.
This is their 4th year dancing to help the community. They will be raising money for the Family Safety Center of Memphis and Shelby County.
The director, Valentina Taran, said that the main goal is to raise the awareness and importance of women and children.
The Shimmy Mob is an international dance event, also called a flash mob, which is limited to a closed group of people.
Anyone can sign up before the deadline and you do not have to have dancing skills or know how to dance to be a part of the organization.
Each city may sign their city up to be apart of the Shimmy Mob.
“Debra Parmley saw the website and was involved in dance and wanted to be apart of the organization so she sign our city up and we’ve be doing it ever since,” Taran said.
The organization grew simply by word or mouth and placing flyers around the city to a lot of dancers, especially Middle Eastern bell dancers.
“36 members are the highest number of new members we’ve had and we provide tutorials so they can learn the choreography,” Taran said.
During the event the Shimmy Mob has a showcase in the evening and every ticket that is bought will be money donated to the shelters.
There is also a silent auction where practitioners may donate services or authors donate books for the families.
“People may also donate online to help out and give back,” Taran said.
The organization is a way to help the community and help people understand the safety of women and children.
“It is a way for a sisterhood to join together, dance in the streets, have fun, to promote and support the community,” Taran said.
