Restaurant health card: TsunamiBy BreAnna Boyd/MicroMemphis reporter
This week on BreAnna's Restaurant Health Card is Tsunami (http://www.tsunamimemphis.com/about.html). This restaurant is a mixture of signature cuisines located at 928 South Cooper. Ben Smith, owner of Tsunami is proud to call it his own. The hours of operation are Monday through Saturday from 5:30 p.m.- 10:00 p.m. Their dinner menu ranges from Grilled Beef to Seared Scallops. The approach is to give customers an array of Pacific cuisine items to choose from. Jessica Rain is a Cooper Young resident. "I really only come here for the Black Bean Soup. I love the seasoning," said Rain. If you're trying to stay on a healthy eating path, there are a few items on the menu that you can choose from that consist of low calories. For starters, some of the soups and salads are a healthy choice. The green salad with herb vinaigrette and goat cheese is a good choice to start with. There are approximately 110 calories in the herb vinaigrette (http://caloriecount.about.com/calories-wegmans-herb-vinaigrette-dressing-i93774) based on a 2,000- calorie diet. Typically, it's all based on what's added to a salad that makes it unhealthy. The lettuce itself is healthy, but when you add an excesive amount of cheese and higher calorie dressings is when the problem comes in. The spinach salad with ginger-soy vinaigrette is also a healthy choice. Ginger-soy vinaigrette consists of about 90 calories (http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-calories.asp?recipe=1003563) which is fewer calories than the herb, but not everyone is a fan of spinach. Healthy choice menus for an entree would be the crusted tuna on cucumber salad. Tuna is very high in protein consisting of all amino acids required for strong muscles. Tsunami offers a menu that they call "small plates." This section consists of an array of food items such as marinated steak and potatoes and chipotle BBQ mahi-mahi with black bean salsa that changes nightly. Donnie Graham is the chef at Tsunami. "We make a lot of gluten-free breads. We use Mary's gluten free rolls and products." Mary Durham is the owner of Mary's Gluten Free Goods (http://marysglutenfreegoods.com/our-story). She bakes all of her foods inside of her home-certified kitchen. Tsunami caters to vegans as well. They are constantly adding new dishes to the menu. |
